King Canute is a famous old English king who is known for having to tried to tell the waves to stop coming in, and so was covered in sea water, no matter how strong his assertion to the sea to stop. When he failed (as he clearly knew he would,) he rebuked his courtiers by saying:
'Let all men know how empty and worthless is the power of kings, for
there is none worthy of the name, but He whom heaven, earth, and sea
obey by eternal laws'.
Today, in a spirit of historical re-enactment, but apparently without the same prescience of failure, George W. Bush will reassure the people of America, and by extension the world, that all is fine.
"President George W. Bush will address the nation this morning to tell Americans they should remain ``confident'' amid falling stock markets and a worldwide credit crisis, administration spokeswoman Dana Perino said."
I had to make sure I was on Bloomberg, and not the Onion. That's beyond satire.
