Saw this frankly alarming post in the Guardian, about the lack of winter ice in the Arctic. Now, I would have to say that the predictions that are being offered are not consistent, but that fact that we have no reliable or even credible model as to what is happening underlines two things:
Firstly, we do not understand what is happening due to the complex nature of the forces that are interacting, and the chaotic nature of these interactions, where a small tipping point may have a large final effect.
Secondly, the fact that we do not have a reliable or credible model means that we have hit new territory, and so anything that happens from now on is speculation. Meaning that anyone who talks with confidence about what is going to happen next is more or less talking rubbish.
One thing is certain, the actions have already been taken, via industrialisation, increase in CO2 levels, global dimming, warming, and so on. What we are waiting to see now is how the system shakes out.
From the polar bears point of view, I would think about making more land dwelling hybrids like the one recently shot in the Arctic. Might be the only way to overcome the disadvantage of being a polar creature with no-where to stand. Mind you, you can hear the grizzly bear reactionaries even now.
